Autumn and Winter are usually quieter seasons for working in the garden, though one of the jobs which often crops up regularly during the colder months of the year is clearing the lawn of dead leaves. However, although it can be a tiring job raking up leaves from the lawn, it is far more important to make sure dead leaves are not blocking the gutters and downpipes of your home.
There are several gadgets which will make gutter clearing less time-consuming or, which may even make the chore non-existent. An inexpensive solution is to buy small, mesh gutter filters which are placed at the top of your downpipes and which will prevent leaves and other debris from blocking pipes and drains. Although this little gadget will help to keep downpipes clear, it may still lead to gutters becoming blocked somewhere along their length. You may need to use a telescopic gutter cleaner which has a long handle and a metal hook with a D-shaped paddle at the end. The householder just slides the gutter cleaner along the length of the gutter, pushing out all the rubbish and debris as it moves along.
However, an even simpler solution is to fit a gutter brush which sits inside the gutter. This invention still allows rainwater to freely run off the roof and flow through downpipes but prevents leaves and moss from the roof from getting into the gutter in the first place. The gutter brush, which is sometimes called a hedgehog brush, comes in lengths of up to 4 metres. Once installed, you may find that you never have to clear out your gutters again, allowing you more time to spend on clearing the leaves from your lawn instead!
