Gardening

Jobs for the garden in February

Annuals
Prepare sites for sowing annuals by digging and turning over manure into prepared beds. Sow half-hardy annuals in a cold frame or greenhouse towards the very end of the month. Continue to dead head any Winter flowering pansies. These plants will continue flowering into the Spring and early Summer if they are looked after carefully.

Perennials
Remove any dead stems before new young shoots begin to grow. Carefully fork over the soil in between plants. New plants may still be planted and older plants divided.

Hedges
Cut back overgrown hedges to near ground level in order to encourage bushy growth.

Roses
Annual pruning can be carried out in mild or sheltered gardens.

Fruit
Prune established fruit trees, making sure cut branches are burnt.

Shrubs
Shrubs for patios and terraces may be planted in their containers. Prune wisteria.

Vegetables
Prepare beds for growing vegetables and start sowing some vegetables and keep under cover.
