Nerines (with some types also being known as a Guernsey lily) are autumn flowering blooms that are colourful, graceful and that make a statement. Many gardeners choose to include them in their autumn garden designs, primarily because of the injection of colour they will add. They are also long lasting flowers that will continue to bloom throughout the autumn, and they are relatively easy to look after – especially if you choose a hardy variety. They can be a lovely addition to borders and planters, allowing them to be grown in gardens and outdoor areas of all sizes.
There are many reasons why people plant Nerine bulbs in their gardens and these distinctive blooms can add a lot to an outdoor space during the autumn months, once summer flowers have started to fade and die off. These are some of the main reasons why people might choose to grow Nerines:
- They are available in a variety of colours. The main colours that Nerines come in are pink, white and red, and you can choose different intensities of these colours depending on the type of bulb you choose to plant. You can easily incorporate them into your garden, and they are guaranteed to make a statement with their colour and shape.
- They are long lasting. Nerines will flower in autumn and their blooms will last a long time. Just be aware that in order for them to grow well, they will need enough space. They generally won’t compete very well with other flowers.
- Nerines flower in the autumn. If you have already planted lots of lovely colourful bulbs for the spring and summer, Nerines will add that touch of colour later into the year as well. You can even get some varieties that will flower later than autumn, though these might not do as well out of doors. As other flowers are dying after the summer, Nerines will just be starting to bloom, making them a good addition to a year-round garden.
- They do best in a sunny environment. Nerines won’t flower if in shade, so if you have some sunny spots in your garden that you are looking to fill, Nerines could be perfect. If they have enough space and enough sunlight, Nerines will thrive.
- You can choose bulbs of many different varieties. You will find approximately 26 different Nerine species, all of which have six thin petals. These are what give them their distinctive look, but if you want a certain colour or appearance, check the different varieties to find the one that will be right for you.
- You can choose hardy Nerines if required. With so many different varieties, you can select a Nerine bulb type that will produce hardy flowers if you prefer.
- You can use them as cut flowers. Many people grow Nerines to use as part of a bouquet. Their shape will make them stand out from other flowers and their blooms are easy to cut and incorporate into a beautiful bouquet. You can keep them indoors in a vase or use them as part of an occasion bouquet.
