You will need to mow the lawn on a weekly basis at this time of year.
Make sure you trim privet hedges and honeysuckle to prevent them looking straggly and untidy.
Early in the month is an ideal time to take cuttings of clematis, cotoneaster and fuchsia.
Remove suckers from hybrid tea roses and pinch off small buds to encourage larger blooms to open out. Spray against greenfly and other diseases.
Remove faded blooms from rhododendron bushes.
Cut down early flowering perennials to about 10cm from the ground.
Check over dahlias and pinch out tips of leading shoots. Water regularly, especially during dry spells and mulch and spray against pests.
Support tall annuals with bamboo supports.
Divide daffodils and narcissi when the leaves start to become yellow.
Tall, bearded irises may need supporting. Once they have flowered, then the stems can be cut back.
Cover fruit bushes and growing strawberry and raspberry plants with netting to protect against birds. Peg down strawberry runners and start to thin out apples, pears, plums and gooseberries.
