Recommended Garden Jobs for September

Even though September has been a very changeable month for the weather, there should still be days and opportunities to get outside into the garden. If you do not have very much time on your hands, then these are some of the chores which you should really try and tackle before colder weather sets in.

  • Divide herbaceous perennials such as delphiniums.
  • Make sure you pick Autumn raspberries.
  • This is the time to collect seeds from perennials and half-hardy annuals, especially if you are keen to grow plants from seed. For some plants, seeds can be sown at this time of year too.
  • Cover ponds with chicken wire or netting to stop leaves falling into the water and contributing to silt and sediment at the bottom.
  • Make sure newly planted plants are watered regularly during any dry spells.
  • Dig up remaining potatoes before slugs feast on them.
  • Clean and tidy the greenhouse and cold frames so they are ready for use later on in the season.
  • Cover leafy vegetables with netting to deter birds from destroying crops.
  • Continue planting spring bulbs.
